So Just Who are DGSB’s Governors?

Parent Governors:

Alyson Young
Aylson Young Alyson Young is a Parent Governor. She is the mother of a year 7 DGSB pupil and has an older daughter at DGGS where she was herself a former pupil. As a practising business lawyer running her own practice, she has expertise in legal compliance and commercial contracting. Her financial acumen is of great importance at this time in the life and development of the school. Aly has a keen interest in personal development and well-being. She brings with her experience from having been the governor of a local primary school.

Headteacher: 

Phil Horstrup
Philip Horstrup Phil Horstrup became Headteacher at DGSB in September 2018, having been Deputy Headteacher (and previously Assistant Headteacher and Head of Sixth Form) at Maidstone Grammar School for Girls. Born in London, Phil moved to Kent aged 10 and was educated at Harvey Grammar School in Folkestone, before doing his BA in French at Southampton University. He undertook his PGCE at Canterbury Christ Church University and has taught in a number of different environments including single sex-selective, mixed selective and non-selective schools in Kent and Medway.

Staff Governor: 

Matt Rosier
Matt Rosier is currently in his sixth year of teaching at DGSB. He joined the school initially as the subject leader for Philosophy, Religion and Ethics and now manages a range of other subjects.  He has overall responsibility for Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development across the school curriculum. He is passionate about teaching, the school and his family, which includes two children.

Local Authority Governor: 

Les Craggs
Les Craggs Les Craggs is the current Chair of Governors. Before retirement, he worked in education himself. His first role in Kent was as a secondary headteacher before leading the county’s inspection and advisory service. He oversaw Hertfordshire’s school system before his final work in London, including being Senior Director for the National Strategies for the government’s educational department. He has three children, one a teacher at a Kent school. His son studied at DGSB.

Partnership Governors:

Peter Jull
Peter Jull Peter Jull is himself an Old Pharosian. Since his school days at DGSB he has pursued a career path first in banking and then in business. Qualified as an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers and having worked for many years in local branches, he is well placed to fulfil the role of Finance Governor. His experience of running a local business adds to the expertise he brings to the Governing Board. He has served previously as a school governor to a local primary school and is currently a district councillor and the chairman of the local chamber of trade.
Chris Turner
Chris Turner Chris Turner is a retired university lecturer, and worked in the Institute of Education at Manchester Metropolitan University. Before that he was the Head of English at a comprehensive school in Stockport. Prior to moving to Deal, he was the Chair of Governors at a girls’ comprehensive school in Manchester. He leads for the Governing Board on matters to do with Teaching and Learning, meeting regularly with the school’s Assistant Headteacher. He also takes a special interest in the subject he used to teach.

Co-opted Governors:

Andy Bawtree
Andy Bawtree Revd Andy Bawtree is our Vice Chair. He serves as priest in River, a parish in the Dover Deanery and the Diocese of Canterbury. He has been involved in education as well as the Church of England for many years, having taught and been Chair of Governors in a Hertfordshire school. He spent some time working  in the USA before coming back to Kent. He has four children, three of whom have been and are educated at DGSB. His foci within his governance include Community Links, Post 16 Provision, Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development.
Alan Barham
Alan Alan Barham was a secondary headteacher for 22 years, retiring 4 years ago. Since retirement, he spends a lot of time supporting a number of schools through being a governor, in three instances as the Chair. He also uses his expertise in education to chair assorted conferences

Associate Members:

Ben Ralph
Ben Ralph is one of our two Deputy Headteachers. He is in charge of Curriculum and Outcomes and is also the Lead Teacher for A Level Economics. Ben joined DGSB in 2000 as a newly qualified teacher and has taken on increased responsibility over time. He has served on the Governing Body since 2010.
Andy Rogers
Andy Rogers Andy Rogers is also an Associate Member. As an experienced civil servant working for the Home Office, he specialises in Business Continuity Planning and will be putting this expertise to good use as the school embraces the significant developments  the future holds. Andy has eight years’ experience as a governor, including as Chair at a successful local primary school and is currently a parent governor also at Dover Grammar School for Girls, which will help develop further the collaboration that already exists between the two schools. He has two children, his son having just started at DGSB.

Clerk to the Governing Board:

Hazel Groves
Hazel Groves Hazel Groves became Clerk to Governors in December 2019, taking over from Ron Dale who had served DGSB ably for 5 years until he decided to retire. Hazel has two sons, both at Dover Boys. Before becoming a parent Hazel worked in the legal profession with a particular focus on child protection. Hazel has been a primary school governor for many years before joining DGSB and was the Lead Governor for Safeguarding before taking up her new role.
